Executive Summary

The research is intended to present the readers with a clear picture on the current technological and project status of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) in the United States. As such, we have endeavored to provide several case studies of the largest and most important ITS projects in the US. This should allow the readers to see the scope and intensity of the deployment of various hardware components and systems. It should also allow the readers to envision the scope of what the projects authorities were attempting to accomplish, both from a hardware and technical architecture point of view. These project case studies should further show the technical barrier borne by the project authorities, users and system integrators on the project.

We also present many company profiles of both ITS hardware component makers and ITS system integrators and designers. Our choice of companies is based upon those companies that are getting the most equipment deployed or the system integrators that are working on the largest and most important ITS projects. This list includes companies involved in just maker single components, like CCTV camera systems or Variable Message Signs as well as those companies that are involved in entire complex Commercial Vehicle Operations equipment design and development. Some system integrator specialize in transportation industry projects dealing with roadways only, other have a more multi-faceted approach and have practices in many industries outside of transportation. We summarize all the vendors by equipment category and alliances within one section of the report.

In order to help visualize the future of the ITS market, the report also presents forecast for the demand of various ITS hardware segmented by equipment type such as CCTV, loop detectors, etc. This should allow the reader to get a good picture of the overall size and breadth of the market for ITS equipment, now and over the next several years.
